The King Cleanses His House

Jesus enters Jerusalem as her rightful King and immediately claims His Father's house as His own. Matthew 21:12 says, “And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves.” The King will not tolerate corruption within His house; He purges it with His own hands, and He asserts His own authority over it. He explains Himself in 21:13: “It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”He quotes Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11 together, thereby fulfilling the prophets and judging Israel's corrupted worship with His own royal authority.

Jesus then heals the blind and the lame within the temple courts (Matt 21:14), and children cry out, "Hosanna to the son of David" (21:15). The chief priests resent this praise. Still, Jesus silences them with Psalm 8:2: “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise” (21:16). He then withdraws to Bethany (21:17), leaving Jerusalem to reckon with His claim. The nation must now decide whether it will receive Him as King or reject Him as it rejected the prophets before Him.

This scene confronts every reader with a King who owns His house, judges false worship, and receives true praise from humble hearts alone. Peter therefore commands, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19). Paul likewise preaches that God “commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30), because God “hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained”(Acts 17:31). Jesus is “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Rev 19:16), and every knee will one day bow before Him, for “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” and "every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Phil 2:10–11).

Bow to Him today in genuine repentance and full submission, and confess Him now as Lord, before He returns to judge the living and the dead.
