Demas Hath Forsaken Us

The Apostle Paul talks amazingly about one particular person in 2 Timothy 4:10 and says, “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica.” Paul had the experience, as many have since, of a professing brother in Christ ejecting from him and the church. This is such a short, powerful, punchy description or explanation of what occurred with this one man. His friend Demas, so overtaken by his worldly desires and priorities, abandoned his spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ and turned away from the Lord and His body.
Demas had a fundamental love for the world, which led him to prioritize worldly comforts and opportunities over his faith and ministry with Paul. The verse suggests that Demas was drawn to Thessalonica, a commercial center, potentially seeking worldly success or opportunities that were not available while sticking with Paul. As the love of the world over Christ proved itself in the life of Demas, this would say that he never had biblical love for the Lord in the first place. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13 that love endures and never fails. Anyone can struggle, but for someone to take off, not return, and just “ghost” the church without word, this is not struggle at all. It is just giving up. It is one of the most disheartening actions and it happens, as I witness it over forty years, more than ever before.
The example of Demas should serve as a cautionary tale, reminding believers of vigilance against the allure of worldly things and to prioritize their relationship with God. His actions highlight the need for believers to discern their own hearts and ensure that they are not being led astray by temporal things, underscoring the importance of staying faithful to God, even when faced with challenges, temptations, and hardship.
