Consideration of Paramount Importance

Scripture declares that the “whole duty of man” is to “fear God, and keep his commandments” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). This task is paramount, for the Lord instructs us, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). Our soul’s whole focus must be set upon this high mark.

To please the Lord is the very foundation upon which belief rests. For “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). This sacred pursuit requires a complete devotion of the heart, even as the Lord commanded, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment” (Mark 12:30).

Consideration of the alternative path magnifies the importance of this endeavor. For “the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:7-8). A path of man's own will leads to ruin, for “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

Therefore, every action, word, and thought must be directed toward this ultimate purpose. “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). By this diligent labor in faith, we may find grace to hear the assessment of the Master, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:21). This goal and successful action of the Lord Jesus was to what the Father exclaimed, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
